ChemLab

Available for Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s Mac OS X, and available as a Standard and Professional edition, Model Science Software’s ChemLab application brings a virtual chemistry lab on your computer. You can use the application to perform chemistry lab simulations on your Windows or Mac OS X-powered machine.

Any modern PC or Mac will easily meet the requirements needed for running ChemLab. If you have a PC, you need to have it powered by Windows 7 or an older version, all the way down to Windows 2000. If you have a Mac, it must be powered by version 10.1.5 or newer. Downloading ChemLab and getting it up and running will take little of your time and will require minimum effort.

When you launch ChemLab, it will invite you to pick a supported simulation module. Please note that the trial version of ChemLab comes with a limited number of labs. The Standard version comes with more than 35 complete lab simulations.

ChemLab’s interface is divided into two panes. The pane to the left presents info on the lab module you select, on the procedure, and lets you write down observations. The pane to the right is the lab window that you can use for your chemistry experiments. Above these two panes there are buttons associated with various functions ChemLab can perform.

With ChemLab installed on your machine, you have access to a virtual chemistry lab that you can use to perform lab experiments. To get an idea of what can be achieved with the application, the developer included a lab demo (you can access it from the File Menu -> Lab Demonstrations). This demo will explore the use of titration; small quantities of a base will be added to an acid and the rise of the pH will be recorded.

The functionality ChemLab has to offer comes in handy if you want to safely conduct a potentially dangerous chemistry experiment or if you want to present lab experiments to students without needing an expensive and potentially hazardous lab.
